China and Bangladesh

The year 2010 marked the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The closer comprehensive partnership of cooperation between the two countries further moved forward.

The two countries enjoyed frequent high-level exchanges and deepened political mutual trust. Leaders of the two countries exchanged visits. In June, Vice President Xi Jinping paid an official visit to Bangladesh. During the visit, he held talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Wazed Hasina, met with President Zillur Rahman, Speaker of the National Assembly Abdul Hamid and opposition leader Khaleda Zia. The two countries signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation Between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. In March, Prime Minister Sheikh Wazed Hasina paid an official visit to China. President Hu Jintao and NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo met with her separately. Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with her. During the visit, the two sides issued a joint statement and decided to establish and develop the China-Bangladesh closer comprehensive partnership of cooperation from a strategic perspective and in line with the spirit of long-term friendship, equality and mutual benefit. The two sides signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, the Framework Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh on a Concessional Loan Provided by China to Bangladesh, and the Exchange of Letters on the Construction of the 7th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge at Kajirtek. They also decided to carry out cooperation in agriculture, flood prevention and disaster reduction and culture.

Economic cooperation between the two countries displayed a good momentum. Projects such as the Shahjalal Fertilizer Company and the seventh China-Bangladesh Friendship Bridge made positive progress. China gave zero-tariff treatment to 4,762 products from Bangalesh, which took effect on 1 July.

The two countries had active exchanges on various levels. Secretary of the CPC Gansu Provincial Committee Lu Hao, Member of the CPPCC National Committee and Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China Xue Cheng and Governor of Yunnan Province Qin Guangrong visited Bangladesh respectively. The Bangladeshi Minister of Agriculture Motia Chowdhury and Minister of Industry Dilip Barua paid separate visits to China. The Bangladeshi Minister of Commerce Muhammad Faruk Khan attended the Bangladesh National Pavilion Day of the Shanghai World Expo. The Minister of Social Welfare Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid attended the opening ceremony of the Guangzhou Asian Games. There were close exchanges between political parties of the two countries. Vice Minister of CPC International Department Liu Jieyi visited Bangladesh. Leader of the BNP Khaleda Zia visited China.

Exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in cultural, educational and military fields further deepened. In October, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Bangladesh-China People's Friendship Association of Bangladesh jointly organized the China-Bangladesh Friendship and Brightness (Ophthalmic) Trip. Chinese medical experts did vision recovery surgery for 100 Bangladesh cataract patients free of charge. During the 2010-2011 academic year, China provided Bangladesh with 70 scholarships of various kinds. Military-to-military exchanges and cooperation produced tangible outcomes. The Bangladesh Director General of National Security Intelligence and Director General of Forces Intelligence visited China separately. The Bangladesh Air Force Chief of Staff General Zia and Army Chief of Staff General Moeen U Ahmed both visited China. Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Defense Major General Jia Xiaoning visited Bangaldesh. Chinese Navy's medical ship Peace Ark visited the Dhaka area of Bangladesh in November.
