On October 14, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping met in Dhaka with President Abdul Hamid of Bangladesh.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Bangladesh is an important country in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region, and also a country with huge population. With a history of friendly exchanges dating back over a thousand years, the Chinese and Bangladeshi people hold amiable affections towards each other. In the 1950s and 1960s, friendly exchanges between leaders of the older generation of the two countries laid a solid foundation for the development of bilateral relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic relationship 41 years ago, both sides have, under the guidance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, maintained a healthy and smooth development in bilateral relations and brought tangible benefits to the two peoples through exchanges and cooperation in all fields. China appreciates Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests, and supports Bangladesh's efforts to defend independence and sovereignty and seek national stability and development.

Xi Jinping stressed that China-Bangladesh relations are now presented with important opportunities. Both sides have reached a spate of important consensus during this visit. The two countries agreed to upgrade bilateral relations to a strategic partnership of cooperation, raising bilateral relationship to a new level. Both sides agreed to improve cooperation mechanisms in various fields, actively implement major project cooperation in key areas and work together on the "Belt and Road" construction, so as to bring benefits to the two peoples and contribute to regional connectivity, development and prosperity. The two sides will also make unremitting efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and push forward South-South cooperation.

Abdul Hamid noted that the Bangladeshi people have been looking forward to President Xi Jinping's visit. Bangladesh and China enjoy a profound friendship, and bilateral relationship, based on equality and mutual respect, goes firmer as time passes by. With the upgrade of bilateral relations to a new high during President Xi Jinping's visit, China has become Bangladesh's first strategic partner of cooperation. Sharing much similarity in development goals, both sides enjoy huge cooperation potential in such areas as trade, investment, agriculture, energy and infrastructure. Bangladesh is willing to continue to support each other on issues concerning respective core interests with China, and become China's reliable cooperation partner in development while strengthening coordination with China on major international and regional issues.
